Driving Standards Agency Approved Driving Instructors

This article, written by John Giel, a Driving Instructor, is about Driving Standards Agency Approved Driving Instructors and has been written for the benefit of those who use them, namely learner drivers and newly qualified drivers.

Firstly, a little bit of information about the Driving Standards Agency:-

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) is one of the executive agencies that forms the Motoring and Freight Services group, within the Department for Transport (DfT). It operates within the United Kingdom.

They are a Trading Fund with planned turnover of £190 million in 2009/10, fully funded through fees and revenue from other road safety initiatives.

They are a national organisation delivering tests from over 400 driving test centres and 140 theory test centres.

They have statutory responsibility for setting standards and conducting theory and practical driving tests. They are also responsible for:

•the statutory regulation of driving instructors and trainers
•the promotion of voluntary registers and non-statutory activities to improve driving standards

There is loads more information about the DSA which you can view if you visit dsa.gov.uk

Secondly, a little bit of information about Approved Driving Instructors:-

Approved Driving Instructors (ADI's)

In order to be able to give driving instruction in return for payment, a driving instructor needs to be on the statutory Register of Approved Driving Instructors. The only exception to this is if he or she holds a trainee licence to give instruction, issued by the ADI Registrar. Details of Trainee Licenses and Potential Driving Instructors (PDI's) can be found on the dsa.gov.uk website. The Register of Approved Driving Instructors was introduced in 1970 in the interests of road safety and consumer protection.

The Register is maintained by the DSA under the provisions of the Road Traffic Act 1988. Before inclusion on the Register, prospective instructors have to pass a series of exams administered by the DSA.

The DSA also carries out check tests on registered ADIs and inspects ADI training establishments that wish to belong to the Official Register of Driver Instructor Training (ORDIT) scheme.

In order to enable Driving Standards Agency Approved Driving Instructors to be found on the internet my company has developed a website, http://www.dsaadi.com which is intended to bring together, from around the United Kingdom, as many Approved Driving Instructors as possible.

On the dsaadi.com website there is a facility that enables Approved Driving Instructors to create a personal profile, telling readers of their profile as much or as little about themselves as they choose.

Ultimately, the dsaadi.com website will contain thousands of pages of information about many aspects that relate to the driving instruction industry.

As a Driving Instructor since 2000, I am well aware of the difficulties that many Driving Standards Agency Approved Driving Instructors face. For example, the independent Driving Instructor seeking new clients in the face of stiff competition from national Driving Schools such as BSM, The AA, Red Driving School etc. The amount of money that many ADI's spend on advertising in publications like Yellow Pages, Thomson Local, local newspapers etc.

The dsaadi.com website could alleviate many of the costs associated with running a small Driving School. It could make it easy for learner drivers to find driving instructors locally. The provision of the Profile feature could help new drivers make an informed decision about the Driving Instructor they would like to learn with.

At the time of writing this article, March 2010, http://www.dsaadi.com is still very much in it's infancy. There is much to do.

In the fullness of time, nearly all aspects of what the Driving Standards Agency oversee, will be provided for by the dsaadi.com website. Provision for new learner drivers to study for and practise Theory and Hazard Perception Tests. Tips and information on many aspects of driving. Articles covering a vast array of subjects, answering many questions to do with or related to driving.

Approved Driving Instructors will also be catered for. We are looking at ways to help with managing Appointments Diaries, enabling new drivers to book driving lessons with Driving Instructors. Methods of automating some functions that could be beneficial such as SMS text messaging, reminding clients of booked driving lessons in order to minimise 'no shows'.

It's very early days and we have a long way to go but I want to finish this article with the following words:-

Vision allows you to see further down the road...Focus allows you to enhance what is on the journey, but ACTION is the only thing that will get you there!
A recent development I have been working on is my website for Approved Driving Instructors.

The idea behind the venture is to make it possible for all driving instructors that have been approved by the Driving Standards Agency for the United Kingdom, to be able to advertise their services.

Having been a driving instructor for over ten years I am well aware of the costs associated with advertising. As you probably know, advertising normally comes at a cost. For example even a small advert in Yellow Pages can cost several hundred pounds.

http://www.dsaadi.com is a FREE ADVERTISING RESOURCE but only for Driving Standards Agency Approved Driving Instructors.

The first step for an ADI is to register on the website and create a basic profile. There is no charge to do this and yet as the website becomes established the PROFILE pages will become regularly viewed and Approved Driving Instructors will gain new clients.

As I and a colleague develop software which will further benefit DSA Approved Driving Instructors the software we develop will be offered to registered members.

In the meantime, if you are a fully qualified and registered ADI, visit Driving Standards Agency Approved Driving Instructors and register. It cost nothing but a few minutes of your time!
